For a long time, my first thought when someone said “paper chain” was those red and green countdowns to Christmas you used to staple together as kid. You know what I’m talking about? Or maybe a countdown to the end of school or something to that effect.
But in the past few years, I’ve started to think of them in another way — a planning device for things I’m really excited about.

It started with a trip to Belize in 2017. I was so excited about it that I wanted a countdown, but there were also a lot of things that needed to be planned out – reservations to make, things to purchase, arrangements to be made etc. So I decided to whip up a quick paper chain and write by to-do list down on the chain.
Supplies
- Watercolor Paper
- Watercolors
- Stapler
- Pen
Steps
- Paint the watercolor paper with your desired backdrops. I did flowers, stripes, leaves, circles, and watercolor pattern
- Let it dry and cut them into strips
- Write down your dates on them
- Write the tasks on them
- Staple them together
- Hang them some place you’ll see it and enjoy watching the list get shorter as you count down.

And then you just hang it up.

I’ve use this trick a few times since Belize. One of the most helpful was while planning for one of my best friend’s wedding that I was a bridesmaid for. It really helped keep me on task and excited.
